Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of undesired offerings might be seen as somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Clear-Out
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 presents received by her by world leaders while abroad. The eclectic collection is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Italian auction firm. The specific date has not been finalized, but the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised going to a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Holdings
The presents are currently locked away in a secure area on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been sitting unused indefinitely.
The full gift list is yet to be disclosed, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The question centered on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.
A Global Array of Presents
The collection includes:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
- A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
- Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
- An assortment including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Diplomatic Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.
This unique auction highlights a unconventional way to handle the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
